Mayor Leonard Church and the City Council unanimously approved to adopt the 2004 Kennesaw Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan prepared by Robert G. Betz AICP, Inc. and HDR, Inc.

 

Sep 2004

In a special election, Kennesaw voters approved to incur bonded debt of $11,739,883 for General Obligation Park and Recreational Facilities bonds, which included $7,200,000 for the acquisition of property from Frank M. Swift and $2,007,833 for phase I development of the property.

Nov 2004

The City of Kennesaw executes an agreement to purchase the property, now known as Swift-Cantrell Park for $7,297,975.

 

Oct 2005

Mayor Leonard Church creates an eight person steering committee to review proposals, interview firms, and recommend a firm to develop a Conceptual Master Plan for Swift-Cantrell Park.

 

Dec 2005

WK Dickson, a multi-disciplined consulting firm specializing in community infrastructure solutions, was selected by the City of Kennesaw to develop a Conceptual Master Plan for Swift-Cantrell Park.

Jun 2006
The City of Kennesaw requests qualification statements from qualified and experienced design firms for engineering and design services for Phase I development of Swift-Cantrell Park. RFQs are received from five engineering and design firms.

Jul 2006
After reviewing each RFQ and interviewing each firm, MACTEC Engineering and Consulting (E&C) was selected by the City of Kennesaw to design and engineer the Phase I development of Swift-Cantrell Park.

Dec 2006
MACTEC completes construction plans for Phase I development.

Jan 2007
The Mayor and City Council unanimously approve the construction plans for Phase I development and authorization to advertise for bids.

Feb 2007
Sealed bids were received from four qualified contractors for the construction of Phase I. The Mayor and City Council unanimously approved a motion to authorize staff to begin negotiations with the lowest responsive bidder, Site Engineering Inc., to develop Phase I of Swift-Cantrell Park.

Apr 2007
The Mayor and City Council approved a resolution authorizing a contract with Site Engineering Inc. for Phase I development, not to exceed $2,996,666.03. The contract allows the City to perform a specific number of the items in-house or by sub-contracting those items/duties. Some of these items include paving, landscaping, and the purchase and installation of playground equipment. Site Swift-Cantrell Park GroundbreakingEngineering Inc. provided the lowest price alternative deductions for these items. The initial lowest bid was over $4.3 million, but through value engineering and negotiation, the entire Phase I development will be completed, with the exception of lighting the trails. The contract was signed on April 3.

A groundbreaking ceremony was also held on April 3. The Mayor and City Council, Recreation & Culture Commission members, City staff and others, including Grace Cantrell, former owner of the property, attended the groundbreaking.

Swift-Cantrell Park Ribbon CuttingSwift-Cantrell Park opens to the public.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on December 15. The Mayor and City Council, Recreation & Culture Commission members, City staff and others attended the ceremony.
